FOLEY GARDENS
FREEPORT, ILLINOIS
Once again
we extend cordial greetings
to our friends
everywhere.
It is indeed a pleasure to send you our.1953 Catalog. You
will find it “chuck-full” of good values in bulbs.
Our growing season and weather conditions all during 1952
were as near perfect as any bulb grower could ask for. We
were fortunate to escape the terrific heat that prevailed over
much of the country for weeks at a time. Our spring was early;
our fall late. Rains came at even intervals until digging time,
and then weather and soil conditions could not have been more
ideal for harvesting the best crop of healthy, high-crowned
bulbs we have ever had.
All of our bulblets and planting stock were grown on new
ground and what growth they made. Flowers were not cut from
these bulbs. The bulbs are clean, plump, and solid—the kind
we are proud to send you when filling your orders. We will
be happy to share our excellent crop with you by being gener-
ous with “extras.”
Nineteen fifty-two was another record year for visitors from
far and near. We are always pleased to have you see our
various plantings and cordially invite you to visit our gardens
at any time, though glads are usually at their best from late
July through early September. Come and see the colorful
display of tulips during blooming time in May. Our home is
easily located at 221 N. Foley Avenue. Our telephone number
is Main 2539.
You have no idea how much we appreciate the many cards
and letters of thanks and appreciation we receive every day. I
wish time permitted a personal reply to each one. These
letters and cards bring to us a realization of our responsibility
of doing everything we can to send out the best aa that can
be grown and to give increasingly better values, prompt and
friendly service.
There is no richer blessing than that of good health. Our
wish is that you will not only enjoy the best of health, but also
the happiness, contentment, and recreation of working in your
garden among your glads and other flowers.
We hope we may be permitted to serve you in many helpful
ways this year and throughout the years to come,
Cordially and sincerely yours,
FOLEY GARDENS

35 large high-crowned bulbs pictured above.
Each
bulb will measure from 114 to 2 inches or more across.
Everyone of the 35 will be a different variety.
You swamped us with orders for
our Special Blue Ribbon Collection
for two successive years. At planting
time 1952 we had decided to eliminate
this offer, but after harvesting our
prize crop of bulbs during the fall,
we reverse our decision and repeat
the most popular special offer we have
ever catalogued knowing we would
have the many thousands of bulbs
needed for the Blue Ribbon Collec-
tions.
Think of the pleasure and enjoy-
ment you will have in watching 35
different varieties come into bloom.
We positively guarantee there will be
no two alike and that each bulb will
be large size, 114, to 2 or more inches
across just like those pictured above.
We are positive this Collection of
35 outstanding varieties represents the
best value available to home garden-
ers of America. Here is your oppor-
tunity to enjoy the greatest assortment

tifully ruffled and frilled varieties.

early, midseason, and late varieties in
each Collection. This Blue Ribbon

any flower-loving friend, neighbor. or
relatives. You may order as many
Collections as you need. Each will

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
WE GUARANTEE COMPLETE SAT-
ISFACTION OR YOUR MONEY BACK.
All bulbs and plants are guaranteed to be
true to name and free of injurious insects
and disease. If you have a complaint of
any kind at any time PLEASE TELL US,
so that we can make an adjustment or cor-
rection satisfactory to you.
ORDERING
PLEASE SEND YOUR ORDER AS
EARLY AS POSSIBLE. Use the conven-
ient order blank enclosed. All orders will
be acknowledged when received.
Because of increased postage rates and
higher packaging costs we prefer not to re-
ceive orders for less than $2.00. If your or-
der is less than $2.00 please include 25c
extra to cover postage and handling.
YOU MAY ORDER 3 BULBS AT THE
10 RATE, but no single item for less than
the smallest unit listed. In other words if
a variety is listed at 2 bulbs for twenty
cents, we cannot sell one bulb for ten cents,
as the packing costs and extra work in-
volved will be too expensive.
EXTRA BULBS
When your order is filled you can depend
upon our putting in extra bulbs of varieties
you order and bulbs of newer varieties for
you to try. Usually the extra and trial bulbs
will amount to from 10% to 20% of what
your order totals. If you will send your
order promptly we will not only be able to
spend more time in selecting the choicest
bulbs for you but can and will be more lib-
eral with extras. However, extra bulbs do
not apply to collections except as stated in
the collection offer.
It will help us in selecting extra bulbs for
you if you will mention a few varieties you
would like to try. You will be happily sur-
prised when your bulbs arrive and you find
out how generous we have been.
SHIPPING
ALL RETAIL ORDERS ARE SHIPPED
BY PARCEL POST. WE PAY THE POST-
AGE. Your permission to ship as early as
possible will be greatly appreciated. How-
ever if you specify a definite shipping date
we will be guided by your wishes and in-
structions.
SPECIAL NOTICE
If you wish bulbs shipped during June,
July or August, we will Ve glad to accom-
modate you providing you will place your
order during MARCH, APRIL or EARLY
MAY. The earlier the better. Then while
our stocks are complete we can select your
bulbs and keep them in storage until time
to ship. All such orders should be accom-
panied with at least a 25% down payment.
SELECTING VARIETIES
Many times we are asked, “What varie-
ties should I buy?” or “Which ones would
we recommend?’ Such questions are dif-
ficult to answer, because what would please
me you may not like at all. A lot depends
on colors you prefer and for what purpose
you want the blooms. REMEMBER that
if we did not think a variety was worth-
while it certainly would not ie listed.
It has always been our policy to be
honest, fair and as accurate as possible in
describing each variety. On this basis you
can make your selections with full confi-
dence, that those you choose will perform
excellently if you will give them reasonable
care and attention.
Each year we find it necessary to make
some changes in varieties. It is impossible
to list them all or to grow them all. If a
new or old variety will not perform satis- |
factory for us from one year to the next, we
think it would be most unfair and unethical
to sell bulbs of such varieties to you.
Again our trial garden was a thrilling ex-
perience. It was “oh and ahs” and “look
here” as some of the new varieties unfolded
their beauty. Some were disappointing and
will be discarded. We will increase our
stock of others and list them in our next
catalog. A few choice varieties previously
listed were eliminated this year because of
our stocks being too small. The best of these
will return to our catalog another year.
A few older varieties have been perma-
nently discontinued. It is impractical for
you or for us to grow them when newer
varieties are bettter and cost no more.
To grow bulbs that will produce the kind
of spikes and blooms you want we use the
most up-to-date methods, modern machin-
ery and follow carefully, sucessful cultural
directions. Our bulb fields are well tended,
cultivated regularly and kept free of weeds
and harmful insects. This involves a tre-
mendous amount of work and supervision,
but strong, vigorous growing plants which
will produce good healthy bulbs are of
first importance to us, and EVEN MORE
IMPORTANT TO YOU.
We cannot profitably grow either new or
old varieties, which will not consistently
give a high percentage of fancy marketable
spikes and the choice, strong and healthy
bulbs we must have for filling your orders.
SIZE OF BULBS
Bulbs are graded into six different sizes,
ranging from No. 1 the largest, to No. 6,
the smallest. The No. 1 size is 1% inches
or more in diameter, No. 2 from 1% to 1%
inches. Sizes 3, 4, and 5 vary % inch down
to size 6, which is % inch or smaller,
In the retail list you will notice we list
large, medium and small. Sizes 1 and 2 are
Freeport, [lmois

large, 8 and 4 medium and 5 and 6 small.
You will always get the largest bulbs we
have of the size you order. If you order
large size and we are out of the No. 1 size,
then all we can do is use the No. 2 size.
But when this is done you will get extra
bulbs to make up for the smaller size.
Remember we use only good, healthy
young bulbs in filling all orders. From these
you can depend upon having those big,
husky spikes you will be proud to display
and exhibit to your friends and garden vis-
itors.
You can count on large bulbs to produce
the largest blooms and spikes. Medium
sized bulbs will nearly always bloom,
though somewhat later and often with less
buds on the spike. Small bulbs of most
varieties will bloom but the spikes and
flower heads will be shorter.

HARDY GARDEN LILIES
Of all flowers, none is more beautiful
than the Lily. Nor is any more famous in
song or art than those lilies, long sanctified
because of their gracefulness and exotic
fragrance. You have glorious opportunities
to enjoy the most interesting and beautiful
varieties, planted either singly, or in groups.
Each lily has its individual character and
flower shape, giving the plant and flowers
a stately perfection of elegant beauty. We
wish there was some better way than by
the use of words and pictures to describe
them. All are so beautiful, one could pick
at random and draw a prize.
Lilies may be planted either in spring
or fall. Bulbs of some varieties arrive so
late that fall planting is impractical. These
kinds can be successfully planted in early
spring, through May, or during early June.
WE PREFER NOT TO SHIP LILIES FOR
SPRING PLANTING AFTER MAY 25th.
All bulbs are carefully packed in peat moss.
If you will carefully follow the simple
planting and cultural directions we send
free with each order, you can glorify your
garden with Lilies that will become more
graceful and beautiful year after year.

For a continuous foliage display from
late spring to frost, no other plant equals
these. They are easy to grow, thrive in
partial, almost full shade. In the fall before
freezing weather, dig and store them like
Cannas. Or you can pot them for winter
blooms indoors. Start them inside in Feb-
ruary, March or April. Enjoy the rich color
combination indoors until time to plant
them out. Our large 1% to 2% bulbs
represent a mixture of many different colors.
Large bulbs do much better than smaller
sizes. Each, 45c or 3 for $1.15.
Acidanthera
MURIELAE
(Sweet Scented Gladiolus)
A vigorous growing gladiolus-like bulb
which produces highly scented flowers in
late summer. The blooms have a delightful
and soft fragrance. A few spikes indoors
will make themselves pleasantly known
throughout the room.
The flowers are white with sparkling and
clear purple markings in centers. Stems
grow about 2 to 2% feet tall. In mild
climates bulbs may be left in the ground
over winter but in colder regions they should
be dug and handled like gladiolus bulbs.
Top sized bulbs. 3 for 50c; 12 for $1.75.
Tuberoses
Easily recognized for their exquisite
fragrance. One flower will scent an entire
room—especially penetrating in the evening
air. Grows to a height of 24 inches and
more. Flower clusters with waxy white petals
are strikingly beautiful at night when they
shine and sparkle like white marble.
Plant bulbs to a depth of 83 or 4 inches in
the border or open garden in any well drain-
ed soil after danger of frost is past. Tuber-
roses are not hardy and must be taken up in
the fall and stored in a dry cool place.
LARGE BULBS, 2 for 30c; 10 for $1.25.
Montbretias
GIANT HYBRIDS
The Montbretias are highly valued for
cut flowers. They are easily grown and
their graceful flower stems add much to any
garden. The lovely glad-like flowers are
very attractive when grown in groups or
used for flower arrangements in the home.
_ They do best in a light loamy soil en-
riched with leaf mold and a little lime, no
manure. In cold climates the bulbs can be
handled like gladiolus bulbs but in regions
where the ground does not freeze deeply

TALL BEARDED IRIS
FOR LATE SPRING AND EARLY SUMMER
These highly developed, superb Irises,
all of recent introductions, are among
the finest in cultivation today. If you are
interested in adding to your Iris collec-
tion or in getting a start with proven
varieties of real merit and beauty, we are
certain you will find just what you want
among the “Aristocrats” we list, all of
which are from the gardens of a famous
Iris fancier who has one of the largest
and best maintained collections in the
Middle West.
Plant in full sun, in good, well drained
garden soil. The top of the rhizome
(root) should be flush with ground sur-
face. Enrich soil with bone meal, well
rotted manure or best of all compost. Do
not use fertilizers high in n-trugen.
SHIPPING—Iris can be shipped any-
time after July first. We recommend
July and early August planting in cli-
mates where winters are severe, but in
the warmer climates Iris can be success-
fully planted during the fall, even as late
as October or early in November. We
pay postage on all shipments of Iris.
